(NORN9; my current otoge obsession. release date: 31 May 2013)

i'm back from taiwan! and yes i did get loads of clothes and i can back broke. no regrets tho. i'll take a photo of my stash of stuffs soon i guess. and a summary of what happened in taiwan if i remember (side note: i met with the 6.3-magnitude earthquake, and we were right at where it happened. good thing that we weren't high up in the mountains so we were in much danger i guess. we only realised how bad it was when we saw the news).

so yes this will be a post about norn9 and i am not even guilty (official website: norn9).
like i said, this is an otoge and yes you get to be the heroine and go embark in whatever lovefest you'd have with the guy characters (well your harem, girls). a special point for norn9 would be that you can choose the heroine out of the three playable girls. with that, each playable girls have three routes with three guys, each route has different endings (like good end, bad end and sometimes a harem end i think). i'll just go into introducing them as much as i can alright since i'm not done with the whole game (yet). spoilers ahead.

this is koharu (name changeable). pretty much a ditz, she's the first person that you'd encounter when you pay the prologue where you would first play in the point-of-view of sorata (a kid that will then travel back in time and meet the characters in the game, yeah idek). she's so much of a ditz that she doesnt remember her name when asked by sorata at first.

at first i was sure she was the type that i really dislike. yes i hate those kind of heroines (either in games or animanga or RL really). but after going through one round of the game, she has an endearing side and with that said, i wasn't even playing her. even tho she seems a little slow and pretty lost, she's kind and really cute at times. you'll end up liking her no matter what (at least i did). if i've note made it clear, she's the heroine that ranked the lowest when i first saw the character design. yes (side note: first went to nanami and next was mikoto, they'll come up later).

playable routes with koharu would be kakeru's (pure love), senri's (yearning) and masamune's (fate). well i'm looking forward to playing kakeru's route because 1) he's voiced by kaji yuki (alibaba from magi) 2) kakeru with koharu is just adorable 3) kakeru's a natural DoS (meaning he's a sadist). senri's pretty cute, a shota character i guess, but not a route i'd snatch as the first one to play. masamune's like an older brother type, protective and stuffs. then again the art will just bait you to play all of their routes, so just give up and play them.

next, this is kuga mikoto (name changeable). a tsundere, where she'd go all flustered and shoot you down and stuffs you get it. a really nice girl and i love her character design. she reminds me a lot of rin from fate/stay night. you'd probably deem her as mean at first but as the game progresses you'd see her loosing her self-control and just screaming which is quite endearing. she's someone that doesnt want people to look down on her imo.

like i said above, she did caught my eyes right after nanami. probably she's a tsundere character. and then again maybe it's because of the guys that she has as her routes.

playable routes with mikoto would be natsuhiko's (antagonism), sakuya's (silent love) and itsuki's (cage of kindness). natsuhiko's route is a must play for me just simply because he's voiced by ono daisuke. IT'S A RULE TO PLAY HIS ROUTE GUISE (no i'm kidding). but you'd be baited because of the character design, the character's personality and ono daisuke's voice. tell me if you're not baited okay. mikoto has the best looking guise imo. i have a soft spot for itsuki now because he appeared quite a lot in the route i finished just now. and really he's precious. sakuya didnt appear much and i dont know much as of now but he's mikoto's childhood friend. sakuya's a pretty boy but urgh so sexy. screw this everyone is sexy in this game. it's really obvious how sakuya cares a lot about mikoto throughout the game tho. and well itsuki seems very genki and he riles up mikoto's nerves quite often. about natsuhiko ... i'll just leave all of you hanging.

now, favourite heroine here is shiranui nanami (name changeable). lemme just say that when i know about her name, i fell onto the floor and just roll around laughing. because it's like a namesquish of shiranui kazuki (starry sky in winter) and nanami kanata (starry sky in spring), where both of them are like my absolute favourites in starry sky and i just had to put this here (i ship them too because their voice actors yo). alright she's your kuudere type (cool/dere) where she seems all cold and stuffs but she's actually really kind and really shy and adorable like you wanna squish her.

i'm playing her routes first just simply on the wimp that i love her (and because it was said that i'm a kuudere too idek). through the one round of the game i'm done, she's someone that has probably a little problem of finding herself and being herself because how she was raised. thus sometimes she just dont know how to express herself (thus all the drama alright).

playable routes with nanami would be akito's (bargain between crime and punishment), ron's (fixation) and heishi's (amorous friend). truth to be told, i have no idea why i chose to play heishi's route first. i was probably gunning for the guys from mikoto's but i changed it to heishi once the prologue ended (where you are still sorata). something just caught me about him so yes i'm done with his route, both good and bad end and i have to say, his route has the angst that i'm the weakest against. i will not go into much about akito and ron, except that akito's a good cook and nanami and heishi's cooking is really bad. ron is someone that doesnt remember names and also i need to play his route because he's voiced by sugita tomozaku, who also voice kanata in staska and my first love so yes, it's a must. so back to heishi, all i can really say that he's someone that easily shows his emotions thus being the exact opposite of nanami. as time passes he does affect nanami in a good way. the route actually does turn quite bad in the bad end but i'm not complaining because of all the angst. the good end was really cute so it's really nice.

all in all, norn9 is pretty much easier to play compared to starry sky and brothers in conflict: passion pink (which i actually dropped it out of my psp to make space for norn9). they have this affection gauge and it will continue to grow as you choose the correct options and head towards a good end. for a bad end, you'd have to be less than half for the affection gauge. they also have the quick save option so that you can easily save your progress temporarily at an option and quick load option where you can reload your quick save in case you made a mistake in the selection. also once you're on a route, you can't change your route, unlike starry sky where each option you choose at probably the first half of the game determines who you'd probably end up with (and that'll probably only lead to a good end instead of a true end where you'd get married for the in seasons and babies for the after seasons). and ofc unlike brothers in conflict where you have to plan your weekly schedules and wait for events to happen and i have no idea how to play as of now (will probably go back to it after sometimes tho).

ofc you cant forget about CGs in otoges. the CGs for norn9 are flawless and they will bring out all your feels. here's a CG of nanami/heishi's route, the one that i really like.

(this one appeared near the end of the route)

pretty flawless art isn't it? teita sensei's art is pretty. but as a personal opinion, i like kazuaki sensei's art better (starry sky's art). one thing would be the very unique feeling of it being like water-colour. it's just different styles.

norn9 is much more of an alternate-universe otoge while compared to that, starry sky and brocon are more realistic to say, well, powers are involved in norn9 after all. well done to otomate for this otoge because all the feels. i'm still quite bitter that i'm unable to play diabolik lovers on my psp, i'll find a way soon .

as for other otoges i'm waiting to play would be honeybee's seishun hajimemashita! (art is also by kazuaki, like staska). not sure if it'll surpass starry sky because the whole otoge of starry sky has quite a huge place in my heart (i mean it is the first otoge that i played, and i'm not even done with all of them like wtf in seasons and after season plus three routes every season with at least three different endings).

oh yes, norn9 is quite a short game. at least compared to starry sky (i had to sit there and it took at least 10 hours to finish staska in one sitting). norn9 took probably around ... 6 hours? or lesser i'm not even sure any more. it's just much shorter. overall it's a game worth giving it your time and trying at least a route. i'm on akito's route as of now and akito's kinda like a tsundere (or maybe it's just me). well, here's to all the lonely otakus o/ who needs boyfriends when you have 2D characters hehehehehehehehe.

(from the left to right: ron, masamune, itsuki, senri, heishi, sakuya, natsuhiko, akito, kakeru)

aren't you drooling already? i told you, you'd be baited to play all the routes.
